THE FOLCH I TORRES FOUNDATION

The Folch i Torres Foundation is a private non-profit institution, located in the Castell de Plegamans, a medieval castle many times rebuilt, in the village of Palau-solità i Plegamans (Barcelona, Spain). It is devoted to the work and lives of five brothers, all significant personalities in the history of Catalan literature, art and pedagogy.

Founded in 1992, the Folch i Torres Foundation opened its doors in October 1995. Its main goal is to assemble and preserve the work and personal documents of the five Folch i Torres brothers, and to make it available to general visitors as well as to specialized students.

The Folch i Torres brothers took active part in the history of Catalan arts and literature between the late 19th century and the first half of the 20th.

Manuel Folch i Torres (1876-1928): Lawyer and writer. He published the satirical magazine Cu-Cut, and collaborated in several other newspapers and magazines. He also wrote dramas and poetry and his most famous work is the children’s book De quan les bèsties parlaven, followed by Encara parlen les bèsties.

Lluís Folch i Torres (1879-1946): Art critic and outstanding pedagogue. He founded the Institut Torremar, the first private institution (Vilassar de Dalt, Barcelona, Spain) for mentally defective children, unique in Catalonia until 1936.

Josep Maria Folch i Torres (1880-1950): Writer and dramatist. He collaborated in several newspapers, mainly the popular Catalan children’s magazine En Patufet (1904-1938). He founded Els Pomells de Joventut de Catalunya, a youth association with deep Catholic and patriotic roots, banned by Primo de Rivera. Josep Maria Folch i Torres is, still nowadays, possibly one of the best children’s theatre writer.

Ignasi Folch i Torres (1883-1927): Writer and journalist. He founded the magazines Futurisme and Actualitats, inspired in the Catalan modernist movement. His passion for music led him to create the Associació d’Amics de la Música, a Musical Society. He run the highly prestigious magazine D'Ací D'Allà between 1919 and 1924.

Joaquim Folch i Torres (1886-1963): Writer, painter, historian and art critic. He became director of Barcelona’s Art Museum (Museu d’Art de Barcelona, 1920-1939), and secretary of the Junta de Museus (Board of Museums). He actively contributed to preserve the Catalan Romanesque mural paintings from spoliation. He published several art magazines and studies on art and artists, as well as a compilation of his own poetry, and left unpublished an ambitious History of the Catalan Paintings of the 19th Century.
In order to enlighten the understanding of the history of Catalan culture, the Foundation organises several public activities - mainly at the Castell de Plegamans - either closely connected with the work of the Folch i Torres brothers or with related subjects.
